Noise Gate: Nguyễn + Transitory, Michel Winterberg

Nguyễn + Transitory is composed of Nguyễn Baly and Tara Transitory. Nguyễn Baly is a non-binary, Vietnamese-German diasporic sound and performance artist who works and lives in Berlin. Nguyễn Baly combines avant-garde art, experimental music and post-colonialism in their work. Tara Transitory aka One Man Nation, makes work which some consider art, some consider music, and some consider trash. Their work crosses disciplines of sound, performance, and installation. Together, the two attempt to approach sound, synthesis, noise, rhythm, and performance from a less colonial lens. Looking into how frequencies, the physicality of producing sounds and its incidental vibrations relate to cognitive memories, stored emotions and catharsis. Their practice also involves efforts to empirically learn more about various Southeast Asian + diaspora queer existences and concealed histories. Nguyễn + Transitory have performed internationally at Siam Museum (Bangkok), Lava Film Festival (Kraków), Museum of Modern Art (Warsaw) and SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin) amongst others. Their immersive site-specific installation sound performance "Bird Bird, Touch Touch, Sing Sing", initially developed at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, was presented at CTM Festival 2019 (Berlin), WORM (Rotterdam), Submerge Digital Arts Festival 2019 (Bristol) and PACT Zollverein (Essen) in its work-in-progress form. The Swiss premiere of "Bird Bird, Touch Touch, Sing Sing" will take place at HeK (Basel).

In "Symbiotic Distortion" Michel Winterberg uses sound sources from electromagnetic interference fields from everyday devices such as fans, computers and power supplies. With these devices and special detectors he improvises, from granular to repetitive or carrying soundscapes and lets the listener dive into a psychedelic noise cosmos. The electromagnetic fields are made audible live by special detectors. In "Symbiotic Distortion", no actual sequencer is used, but only the improvised sounds, which are further processed by delay loops and effect loops and partly reproduced repetitively. Michel Winterberg (1972) works as a media artist with interactive audiovisual installations such as video and sound installations, mixed media and mechanical works. His musical roots lie in the techno club music of the 90s.
