As part of Open House Basel, HeK offers architecture and art in architecture tours. Additionally Patrick Keller of fabric | ch will present his work in the area of artificial intelligence and architecture. Furthermore, the work Satelliten by the artists Anja Braun and Wendelin Schmidt-Ott will be exhibited in the foyer of HeK. The work uses architectural elements as resonance membranes to reproduce sounds previously recorded in various spaces. The artists had recorded sounds as well as fragments of conversations filtered through the walls of a building. The work will also be presented as part of the art in architecture tours.

Programme

Saturday, 18.05.2019

2pm-3pm
Guided architectural tour through the premises of HeK and Atelier Mondial

3pm-3.30pm
Art in architecture tour

When HeK moved into the new building in 2014, several art in architecture projects were realised, which will be presented to visitors during a guided tour.

The installation H3333333333K (2015) by !Mediengruppe Bitnik shows an intervention in the architectural structure of the facade that turns a glitch – a visual software error – into built architecture. Remotewords (2015) by Achim Mohné and Uta Kopp spreads news on rooftops that can only be viewed form above. The canopy of HeK has been inscribed with the quotation "BILD≠KUNST" by art historian Prof. Dr. Hans Ulrich Reck.  Dead Drops (2016) by Aram Bartholl is an anonymous offline file-sharing network in public space. Videos, games, music and photos can be shared with other users. On the roof of HeK there are several interwoven aluminium mushrooms; the work A band of floating mushrooms (2014) by Studer/van den Berg, which stand as a metaphor for urban change. The mushrooms receive signals from a PC server, which can be heard as live streams. Christina Kubisch's Electrical Walks (2014) lead to the electromagnetic hotspots of the Dreispitz area. Thanks to specially developed headphones that translate electromagnetic waves into acoustic signals, the work enables a different perception of our everyday environment.

4pm-5pm
Architectural tour through the premises of HeK and Atelier Mondial

5pm
Lecture by Patrick Keller, fabric | ch

Patrick Keller of the studio for architecture, interaction and research fabric | ch presents the work Atomized (curatorial) Functioning shown as part of the exhibition Entangled Realities. The work consists of an algorithmic generative real-time system that autonomously explores the conditions of a given environment and suggests how this environment could be set up with certain objects. In the case of the current exhibition, the system suggests how the works of the show could be presented in space and thus takes on curatorial tasks.
