Hydra (https://hydra-editor.glitch.me/) is a web-based coding environment for creating visuals in real time. Inspired by analog video synthesis, Hydra makes it easy to combine multiple visual sources (oscillators, cameras, application windows, video streams) in order to create live visual compositions. Rather than a series of knobs and buttons, hydra uses computer code as a language for interfacing with the computer, routing and transforming multiple visual streams by combining sequences of code. The workshop will introduce participants to the practice of live coding – the creation of visuals and sounds via programming in real time – and treat the process of writing code as a creative and exploratory practice, rather than a "tool" with deterministic results.
Specific topics covered include:
- Introduction to live coding and video synthesis
- Analogies between synthesis of sound and image: oscillation, frequency, modulation, pattern
- Audio-reactivity and audiovisual collaboration
- Video feedback and chaotic systems
There is no prior experience necessary.
The workshop is open to anyone with interest in: live visuals, music, programming, video art. Participants should bring a laptop and a webcam (if possible).
