The two artists will perform together as well as individually, presenting new electronic music created collaboratively, plus some of Niblock’s rarely presented – and recently restored - early work. While Niblock’s instrumental-acoustic music has profoundly influenced generations of artists from rock to electronica and beyond - Sonic Youth, Sunn O))) and Carsten Nicolai have all dedicated works to him - until now he has never composed electronic music. Inspired by Ankersmit’s unique skills for creating complex, organic sound forms with his Serge Modular, Niblock has now started creating live electronic music for the first time. Ankersmit will perform new material exploring infrasound, large resonant buildings, and otoacoustic emissions. These are sounds that are actually created by and inside the listeners’ own ears, changing dramatically with the slightest movement of the head. Ankersmit is also developing new work based on the legacy of Pierre Schaeffer, commissioned by GRM and Deutschlandradio, as well as a new spatial sound performance for the 4DSOUND system. These special audiovisual concerts bring together two generations of sonic artists using sound in an almost architectural manner; creating sound-phenomena that manifest themselves as forms developing in space, as well as in time.

Phill Niblock (1933) is an intermedia artist using music, film, and photography, active since 1968 as one of the original New York minimalists. His music and intermedia performances have been presented around the world, including shows at MoMA, The Whitney Museum, The Kitchen in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern and the ICA in London, Maerzmusik in Berlin, and documenta in Kassel. Niblock's music is available on the Blast First, Touch, XI, Moikai, and Mode labels. In 2014, he received the John Cage Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Thomas Ankersmit (1979) is a musician and artist based in Berlin, and one of the world’s few experts on the Serge Modular synthesizer. He performs at venues ranging from Berghain to Tate Modern to experimental music festivals worldwide, and his music is released on the Touch and PAN labels, with a new solo album forthcoming early next year. His live performances are marked by a combination of intricate sonic detail and raw electric power, and an extremely physical and spatial experience of sound.
